Not me, I'm doing fine. Instead, I'm dealing with a couple of other injuries:

• Linus got in a fight sometime late Sunday morning, or at least I think he did. He lost his collar in the process, and he had a few small wounds, mostly around his neck. He was acting pretty mopey all of yesterday, not jumping up to higher perches and taking it easy. But today he's acting happier, so maybe he fought off any infection. I hope so!


• My CD burner may have just crapped out. Either that, or I'm having a string of bad luck in getting it to recognize blank discs. I just burned a music CD yesterday afternoon, and now that I want to back up some photos, it's balking. Boo. It won't even read existing (burned) discs, and I know they're OK because my work laptop opens them. I've restarted the computer with no luck. Shoot. Adding a hard drive was one thing. Replacing the only CD-R/W drive I have is a little more daunting. Good thing I have an external HD for temporary backups.

It's another "snow day" for us here in Seattle.

Snow day

It started coming down late afternoon, but nothing was sticking or freezing by 5 in my neighborhood, so I was able to go out and do some errands. One errand was to pick up some movies from the video store. And one of those* is due back today, so either I drive over in the ice, I walk on my lunch break, or negihama makes the trek today. You see, she gets the day off from work. I work from home, so I'm already at work. No snow day for me.

I'm only sort of resentful. At least she can make me tea, hot cider, and/or soup while I work hard for the money. Meanwhile, I'll bet she'll also get even further ahead of me in LEGO Star Wars II.

*It was Little Miss Sunshine, which was eh. A bit too formulaic for my tastes, although it had some really funny parts in spite of everything. May not be worth driving on a sheet of ice to get, though. Yes, it would make more sense with the amount of stuff we've rented lately to get Netflix. However, we have a great local video store and it's nice to be able to choose something off the shelf on a whim. However, this may be the year that I join Netflix and get a DVR/Tivo.

Boxing Day in Terminal City

We had a good Christmas with parts of negihama's mom's family, and our flights home worked out well. The cats are happy to see us home in a cold house, and we're trying to figure out dinner that doesn't involve cooking.

And here it is, Holiday Travel Eve. This is my first Christmas to travel more than across town to my parents' place. Instead, I'm going with negihama to Maryland to spend Christmas with her family.

I'm not at all anxious about the family stuff; I've met nearly everyone already, and they're all nice. I'm mostly worried about lost luggage and missed connections. Stuff like that. We're changing planes in Minnapolis-St. Paul, which is scary except for the three-hour layover. We may need those three hours.

What have I been up to during the last little bit? Christmas shopping, Christmas music listening, stuff like that. Inspired by socialretard, I've sampled a winter beer a night for the last week or so:

Just one per night. I didn't take notes, though, which sort of wasted the sampling plan. I wanted to figure out which ones I liked the best and get a six-pack or larger bottle of the best ones. But I can't remember which ones were the best. None were that bad, but some were nothing special.

On the weekend, we gave the cats a bunch of cat toys. You can see photos from the resulting catnip-fueled shenanigans here. Last night, Elizabeth and I exchanged presents. I got some things that I could really use, including a ThermaRest pad for camping (my old one was old and busted), new bowls, and lights for my bike. Everything was really cool. I'm hoping that another gift for Elizabeth arrives in the mail today.

The car is currently at the auto shop, being looked at for some annoying (and likely unsafe) hesitation in the engine that occurs not only right after I start driving but sometimes in the middle of accelerating on places like the freeway. I'm expecting a huge bill so I can be pleasantly surprised when it works out to be less than I thought. When my sister is in town around Thanksgiving, her husband is supposedly eager to replace the struts (and shocks?) on my car for parts and beer. Sounds like a deal to me.

Linus already seems a little bit better, although it'll be a while until that ugly cut heals. It has been cold at night and he's sleeping next to my legs and feet most nights – another great thing about Autumn/winter.

Re: TV last night (very vaguely spoilerish, I guess; VOX doesn't do cuts, though):

I missed the intro of The Office, so I hope I didn't miss something amazingly funny. The rest was quite good. Michael was especially cringeworthy last night, but the rest was just great.

I decided to give Grey's Anatomy another try (negihama giving me a headrub/backrub while we watched helped), and although I agree with thewalnut that it's hard to like any character on that show, the prospect of Bailey kicking the ass of Burke (homophobic actor and all; ethically challenged character) and Christina (once my favorite of the show but now incredibly irresponsible and unlikeable) gives me some hope. I just wish she could kill them, but I suppose Sandra Oh is not going anywhere anytime soon.

• Linus got in a fight on Tuesday morning, and I've been warily watching his post-fight actions. Turns out he got a pretty bad gash on his nether regions, and the wound got infected. He's been sort of mopey but definitely different; he keeps his tail low all the time, for good reason it turns out. I brought him to the vet today. I have to clean the area around the wound (fun!) and give him antibiotics via syringe (fun!). The thing is, the last time this sort of thing happened, the wound wasn't visible but Linus was a lot more miserable. Looks like he'll make a swift recovery. What a crappy place to get cut (no pun intended). I need to teach the boy not to run away from an attacker. Back away! Sweep the leg, Johnny! Etc.

• I've scanned and posted the sketches that I got at Stumptown to my Music sketchbook. I think they turned out well. I still haven't read all the stuff I bought last weekend (I made it through the SPX stash, though).

• I got a little side-tracked on working on my GLMC mix, but it's starting to come together. I hope to wrap it up in the next few days.

• * I got that *$ Maple Macchiato the other day, and although it smelled divine, it didn't really work for me. I'm just cut out for sweet drinks anymore. I used to be able to handle the raspberry mochas from Seattle's Best back in my Greenlake days. No more. That plus the Halloween candy that I've been ordered to dispose of, there's too much sugar around. I may need to detox soon.

The week's been relatively unbusy, which has been very nice. The days are sunny but crisper, just the way I like 'em, and the leaves are changing colors. It's my favorite time of year.

* Last night, I rescanned my photos from my 2002 Korea trip. My scanner still sucks, and at some point I'll have to replace it and rescan these, but for the time being they're now in a Flickr set.

Longtime readers of my journal saw these way back when. I had them up on Yahoo! Photos, but the set kept getting switched to being non-public viewable without my input. It's hard for me to believe that it was almost four years ago that I was there.

* Earlier this week, I updated the People's League Web page with the final results from the 2006 season. (The link isn't working when I'm posting this, but I'm sure Scott's just got the server down temporarily.) One of my teams finally won the People's League series championship: the Jamaican Dreadlocks. And here I was planning on changing the name for next season!

* fisticuffs and recurve get married this weekend! Yay for them! I hope all the family stuff has worked itself out, Julie. I've been thinking about your predicament a lot in the last few days.

* We're managing the new TV season pretty well so far. It helps that some shows haven't started yet. Thursday has been tough, as we're trying to sample Survivor and Ugly Betty, watch/tape The Office for sure, watch/tape Grey's Anatomy and CSI, and try not to be spoiled the next day if we miss one or more of the shows. I don't know what we'll do when we go on our trip in a few weeks! Anyway, Veronica Mars starts next week and it's all very exciting!

* Linus has had some run-ins with a cat from two houses away. The other cat keeps coming in our yard and bullying him, and the other night he came in with a scratched ear and a wound on his belly. Other than the first night, during which he hid under the bed for hours, Linus is acting pretty normally, but I'm watching him to make sure his cuts didn't get infected. Poor baby.

This week has mostly been a whirlwind without a lot of strength. In other words, I haven't been too busy, but I feel like I've been busy enough. This applies to work and not-work, I guess.

I had to drive in to Bellevue on Tuesday to train an editor (she's not new, but new to our project), so I got up early that day. On Wednesday, I had to pick up my parents from the airport, so I started work early that day. And today, I need to bring the cats back in to the vet for their rabies booster shots, so I started work early again. I think it's getting to me. This morning, I didn't even need an alarm, because the crows, a car alarm, and the dogs next door all kept me awake from 7 a.m. on.

We watched Project Runway last night, and I think we had the first example in this season of over-editing to create a "story" leaves out key details. Did Angela help out at all with the dress, or did Vincent succeed in keeping her 3 feet away at all times? A quick check of "Tim's Take" on the Bravo site supports that second theory, but the judges actually seemed convinced that Angela wasn't being a team player, which supports Vincent's side. I'm glad neither were eliminated, because the edits made that whole thing murky at best.

This weekend, we're hoping to go camping/hiking somewhere. Just in time for an "Excessive Heat Advisory". Woo, sweat. Still, the actual getting away from Seattle for a night idea sounds great.
