I sent a book to somewhere in the suburbs of Boston today (Sudbury, MA) that has the zip code 01776. Shouldn't somewhere in Boston, or maybe in Philadelphia, have that zip code? North Bend, PA, somewhere in the north-central part of the state, has 17760. Lucky
By the way, if anything in that inventory looks interesting to you (and I could post a list of the stuff that didn't have ISBNs in the Half.com system), we can make a deal. I also have a lot of single-issue (pamphlet) comics not yet cataloged, and most are available aside from my LSH stuff and a few others.
Last night at about 9 p.m., the beginnings of a cold hit me pretty quickly. My nose started running, eyes watering, etc. Before bed, I took a Zicam tablet, and so far this morning, I feel OK. We'll see how it goes.
My scanner works plenty well for this kind of thing (well, except for that blue pencil sketch), but I'm really itching to continue scanning in my old printed photographs. I want a "backup" in case they get lost or damaged, I have the hard disk space to do it, and somewhere in the scores of old photos I have must be some embarrassing gems I can post in my journal. So, I think I'm finally going to cash in the e-certificates my company gave me for Christmas and my birthday and buy a new scanner that does photos better. I have an eye on a pretty cheap but high-resolution scanner, and I think I'll be getting that soon.
In other news, the M's game was amazing. We had seats on the 300 level, five rows up from the edge, right behind home plate. It was a great way to watch Felix Hernandez work his amazing stuff. I usually throw out my scorecard after a few weeks, but I think I might keep this one for a while. That was quite a performance!
I
have to reinstall my scanner before I scan them in, but I got five more
sketches for the "Music" sketchbook. I'll link to'em when they're
ready. I think that if or when I go to Stumptown or SPX, I'm going to
start a new book with a new theme. Maybe "Space," finally?
I went to the geekfest of Emerald City Comicon, and it was a fun time. I bought a few good comics, saw some neat costumes, got the sketches, and saw some B-list sci-fi celebs. It was a great time.
Today, we did a lot of work in the yard. We rented a truck and bought some dirt, we bought a lot of seeds and bulbs, and we mowed the lawn. Next weekend, the real work begins.
Sorry I haven't posted in a while. Hope you had a good weekend. I'm afraid I didn't get around to doing my April Fool's Day prank this year. I have a year to work up a new one, though.
We've also locked down music for the ceremony. Next, I guess, is the officiant. Our third and fourth choices can't do it either, so we're conducting a bit wider search now.
I haven't posted much this week because work is busy. It's sort of cool, because wow it's already 4:35! Except that it's hard to figure out wedding stuff when you're working constantly.
Coming up: probably one day of the Emerald City ComiCon. I don't think I could handle two. I might try to find out if Colleen Coover takes small wedding invitation or program illustration commissions for budget-minded grooms/brides-to-be. Or I might just get too shy. Still, I hope to add a sketch or two to my music sketchbook.
In other comics news, we may try to time our east coast wedding reception with the weekend of SPX, so I can go at least one day of that. We'll see! If not, I'm hoping to not miss Stumptown, so I'll go to at least one indie comics show this year. Tonight: Lost. (I miss LostChat a lot, by the way.)
The latest release of uTorrent caused me to stop being able to download stuff, which usually isn't a problem because I really don't download much TV or anything. However, I missed the latest episode of the Legion of Super-Heroes cartoon, and I hadn't been able to download it. (Dude, it featured the formation of the Legion of Substitute Heroes, plus Matter-Eater Lad and Tyroc appeared!)
Despite my fears at messing up my router or Internet connection, about 10 minutes' work set up port forwarding and I was able to download the show right away. Yay Internets!
So things are starting to come together for the wedding, except for the hundred or so things left on the checklist:
Venues: Both done, reserved, deposited for. We need to find a rehearsal dinner site, but then I have to pick my wedding party, too...
Photographer:
We found this woman on Craiglist who is trying to get into the
lucrative wedding market (she usually does portraits), and she's giving
us a great deal. Her rates were reasonable and she's giving us
a Craigslist discount. I think between her photos and those of all our
friends, we'll do OK. (Taking a cue from
itsolivia, we're going to set up a group photo pool on Flickr for guests to share their photos.)
Wedding dress: Apparently it's amazing, and I can't wait to see it (six months from Sunday)!
Save-the-date cards: Ordered and on their way.
Web site: Already made (or version 1.1 anyway); URL will be shared with potential guests first.
Now for the stuff that we need to worry about address soon:
Food: We're saving on other parts of the wedding, so we'll probably spend the bulk of our money on the food and drink. We need to start testing caterers and call the few restaurants that we know cater and see what they can do for us.
Music: I refuse to spend hundreds of dollars for your typical wedding DJ, who will force us all to do the Macarena. I either need to find someone cool who would be willing to play songs that we like for not too much money (I don't know too many DJs personally), or we need to get a laptop, load it with iTunes and massive numbers of songs, and make some playlists. I'm leaning toward the latter, but maybe we can come up with a solution for the former.
Wedding party: I have a pretty small group of close male friends, and one of them is going to be living in Africa by the time the wedding comes along. No matter what, I can't put them all up there with me because someone has to be in the seats. I'm trying to figure out what to do; should I go with one Best Man, two groomsmen? Three groomsmen? This is one of those things that's stressful because you have to rank your friends. Elizabeth is waiting for me to decide on numbers so she can form her party.
Lodging: Thanks to
fisticuffs
for her tip on putting wedding guest lodging up for bid from various
hotels in the area. A number of them don't seem to feel my maximum
price means anything, but some have been good. A surprising number see
my e-mail as "smohundro@", see "Steve Mohundro" on the form I filled
out, and they still address the e-mail to "Mr. Muhundro". I don't use
"smohundro" because "smuhundro" was already taken! Geez.
Wedding bands: I guess we need to work on those at some point.
Honeymoon: We have enough frequent flier miles for at least one of us to fly free, and we have a few ideas of places to go. Alaska? Hawaii? Mexico? Thailand? We need to give it a little more thought.
I suppose I could just keep all this checklisty stuff on theknot.com, but that site depresses me a little. And it's completely geared toward a bride doing the planning and the groom keeping completely out of the picture. You can't even have two separate logins/passwords for a couple's account!
I don't want to jinx things or anything, but I think we may
have figured out a good wedding date. It all depends on when the
reception site folks gets back to me and how fast I can call the
wedding site folks. Then The fun of making a guest list and making "save the date" cards and/or invitations begins! The reception site has limited office hours, so we're sort of in limbo. Edit: The wedding is in late August!
Julie, we will still ask you for any information you have about vendors. We're just trying to lock down the date so the rest of the process can start!
In other, non-wedding news, well not much is going on. This week, I read some comics (the new LSH chief among the floppies, plus the final Seven Soldiers TP) and am halfway through my latest prose book, which I will post about when I'm done. Both of us made our mixclub mixes, and mine went into the mail yesterday afternoon. I'm back to swimming, finally, after some laziness and cold recovery. I still have an itchy throat, but my head is pretty cleared up.
Saturday, I want to get some errands done, and Sunday I plan to see my old college friends for (maybe) a soccer game (for old-times' sake, although fewer of us still have cleats around) and definitely the Superbowl. I'm going to see my old suitemate/roommate Che for the first time in I don't know how many years, which should be cool. And Monday is my Dad's birthday, so we're going out to dinner with my parents.
Happy Boxing Day, everybody!
We had a good Christmas with parts of
negihama's
mom's family, and our flights home worked out well. The cats are happy
to see us home in a cold house, and we're trying to figure out dinner
that doesn't involve cooking.
Safe travels, everyone! I'll post more later.
We had a nice weekend.
- Right after work, I drove down to Renton to pick up
negihama, and then we drove down to Portland. It's sort of a long drive, but we had mix CDs and word games to play in the car.
- Saturday was the big show: I scored a bunch of comics, a handful of sketches, and Elizabeth bought a couple of really cool prints (this one and this one). One of the artists appeared to have a Decemberists fetish, and we resisted a couple of prints that were obvious song references (this one is my favorite of those). I'll scan the sketches in later so you can see 'em.
- We had dinner with Elizabeth's friend Mike (and his mom), I bought the latest Anathallo CD (great!) at a nearby music store, and we managed to find a theatre to see Running With Scissors (pretty good) that night.
- Sunday, we hit LUSH, Powell's Books, and Reading Frenzy, and then we headed home.
- Leaves were falling like crazy in Portland, and it was really pretty. I wish I'd taken photos.
- We need to carve pumpkins tonight. Last year, I did Charlie Brown, but this year I don't have any ideas yet.

- We have a hotel room in Portland, a Marriott by the convention center. It's not the coolest place in the world, but at least it's handy. I've been going through the Stumptown exhibitor list, and a lot of interesting artists will be there that weren't at SPX. My wallet might not be happy when the weekend is through, but I think I'll be able to get some more good stuff.
- I'm just about done with reading my SPX stash.
- We saw a bunch of movies this weekend. On Friday night, we rented Rebecca (the old Hitchcock movie), which I liked. Saturday night, we saw The Departed (very good, very violent) and Ridicule (pretty good, I didn't like the slam on puns though). Sunday, we saw 49 Up! (always good to catch up with the old gang).
- Fall is here. We drove around a little on Saturday just to see the colors in the trees. This is my favorite time of year: The air is crisp, the leaves are falling but not all of them. Great. I took some photos of a tree a couple of blocks away from our house, but the best light/backdrop was Saturday, when I didn't have my camera.
I finally managed to scan in the sketches I got at SPX. You can see them here.
I also managed to wait too long to book a room at our favorite Portland hotel for next weekend. So I have failed at a key detail. Stupid! Now I have to find something else, and nothing can compare to a converted elementary school. Sigh. I also thought the show was Saturday and Sunday, but instead it's Friday and Saturday. Oops!
Also, I wish I had bought a book and got a sketch from this guy (I found him late and he had just started on a sketch for someone) and this woman (every time I tried to slow down to see her stuff, I was pushed down the aisle) at SPX. At least with the magic of the Web I can still check out their stuff.
